Question:

The Women.....Do Any of Them Deserve to be Number 1?

Its quite odd to say, but despite how strong the womens game has become, and competitive, since Justins departure, no one can play or vie for the top spot and keep it. Ivanovic obviously cant handle it. Jankovic isnt strong enough, and if not for playing so many tournaments and earning points, she would be in the middle of the top 10 at best. Williams Sisters continually have nagging thigh injuries. Over rated Maria has a lingering shoulder injury. Kuz cant seem to get the big wins. The one promising player who is on a hot streak who can be number one before we know it is Safina. Could it be possible? Also we have many up and comers doing very very well. Radwanska, Cibulkova, Azarenka, Szvay, Wozniacki. Can it be that one of these young women will become number one before this time next season? All I know is, whoever is ranked number one the next couple of months, to me means nothing, unless they win to earn it. Especially going in to The Season Ending Championships. At this rate I think Safina can do it, do you? Your thoughts on who will be number one and who deserves it?

  1. I've always stood by the fact that becoming number one isn't deserved it must be earned. But I have to agree with what your saying about Ivanovic, she really has played quite poorly since she became number 1. I also agree with what you said about Henin as a true number 1, when she was number 1 she defended it constantly. I'm amazed how Ivanovic is even still number 1, well I mean Jankovic keeps having chances to take over but she always screws it up. I watched the match between Safina and Kuznetsova today and the way Dinara is playing, she's playing like a number one player and I definitely think she has the stuff to make it to number one. But I also am a huge Williams Sister's fan and I firmly believe Serena will get back to number one sometime next year at least. Ivanovic worked to be number one but she's not really playing or being consistent enough to be called "the number one player in the world."

  2. Yeah it seems like none of these players look like a true number one player. There is way too much inconsistency in all these players' games and many of them lack mental toughness. Safina is on a hot streak now and anyone could take over the number one spot at any moment but it is unlikely that anyone could keep it for long. Ivanovic is bound to lose it one of these days and I think this situation will continue for a year or more until someone starts playing consistent, solid tennis. None of them have the greatness of a Clijsters or Henin at the moment, but all that is needed for any of these players is some consistency.

  3. If Sharapova or one of the Williams is able to stay healthy then one of them deserves it.

  4. it's true that since justine retired nobody could keep the number one spot for more than a few weeks, and maybe we find that odd because we are used to men tennis where it's so clear who are the ones that dominate the sport

i really like dinara safina, she's playing good now and doing well in big tournaments so i think she can be number one, and i also like serena she can come back and be number one again, too bad she's injured right now :(

  5. Couldn't have been said any better!!!

Ivanovic keeps losing at early stages but she retains the top spot as her opponents are not doing any better either.Womens' game is strong indeed but no matter how strong it is when there is no intrigue, competition and high bids every tournamnt(even a GS) can turn into an absolute boring thing to watch.

After Justine left the WTA lack a dominant player, who defeats the others most times(not always of course) and is persistent anywhere she plays. Now it is like anybody could and defeats anybody and Ivanovic is No 1 for she became No1 when competition and stable game still existed. What happened to Sharapova is really sad as she was so excited about the Olimpics. The Williams sister do well in the Grand Slams but they are not so keen during the rest of the tournaments.

Safina is the only persistent player at this stage. As for the rest,it is hard to make any conclusion as the performances are so contrasting.Safina is has both power and stamina. That's why she has defeated so many top players now and then. She is strong-willed.All she needs is to come to the conclusion that there is no point wasting so many nerves during a match. But this will come with experience. She is very promising and is advancing in tennis step by step,so in no more than two or three years she will probably be an indisputable No1.

  6. maria

  7. To me, the women's game just isn't what it was before. Sure these woman are fine all around tennis players, but none of them have that special quality or "flair" that tennis players such as Kim Clijsters, or Monica Seles had. To me, Justine Henin was the true number one, you could see it in her game. Currently, I don't feel that these woman are that great. After watching the match with Safina and Kuznetsova, I feel that IF Safina does become number one, it will be the same situation as Ana'a, as she does not play well under pressure. Who will be number one? I honestly don't have a clue but Jankovic is looking good to me.

  8. You can see that the long running number #1's always had extraordinarily intense love and passion for the game. Giving it their all was always a priority and a true testament to how strong their will is. A champions mentality is that if one is at his/her best than no one should be able to defeat him/her. Furthermore, They don't let anything interfere with their main priority: To become the best. Champions like Borg, Graff, Sampras, and Henin either were gonna play their best, or not play at all and thats what I see is the mentality of a Champion. Nowadays many tennis players are spread out and don't really have the time to focus as much as they would like with the medias attention, Endorsements and advertising deals. It might be a while before we can see that special someone on the tour that we just KNOW in our hearts is gonna be the next Navritalova or Steffi Graff.

  9. None of the players have the passion for tennis like Justine Henin. I wish she still played tennis.

  10. Too many of these women have never even won a grandslam, yet they are fighting for the number one ranking. Why? I would have thought it was better to win grandslams than to be #1. I say based on grandslam performances, you have to go with Sharapova or Ivanovic, or perhaps one of the Williams.
