The Wonderful Cross, ever heard of this song?

I personally find this focusing on something besides God. Like praising an idol. We played this song last Sunday, and I didn't sing it. What do you think?

  1. The wonderful cross, oh the wonderful cross, He came and died that I might die and truly live?

    That one? I think it's a wonderful song that praises Jesus for His act of sacrificial love for us.

  2. The cross is only meant to be a reminder of what Christ did for us. In terms of focusing on something besides God, I guess it depends where your heart is at.

  3. That praise song is really the revamped classic hymn by Issac Watts called "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross".

    As Watts wrote it, it isn't idolatrous.

    When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

    Lyrics: Isaac Watts

    Music: Traditional Melody

    When I survey the wondrous cross

    on which the Prince of Glory died;

    my richest gain I count but loss,

    and pour contempt on all my pride.

    Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

    save in the death of Christ, my God;

    all the vain things that charm me most,

    I sacrifice them to his blood.

    See, from his hands, his side, his feet,

    sorrow and love flow mingled down.

    Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,

    or thorns compose so rich a crown.

    Were the whole realm of nature mine,

    that were an offering far too small;

    love so amazing, so divine,

    demands my soul, my life, my all.

  4. Yes, that is sung often at my home church.

    It focuses on the cross Jesus died on to save me from my sins.

    1 Corinthians 1:18

    For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

    When I was a kid we used to sing about "The old rugged cross".
