The World Junior Rowing Championship is scheduled to be held in Czech Republic in August. The rowing teams around the world are getting ready to sharpen their skills for the big competition.
The Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Aviron (FISA) is the central body which conducts the World Junior Rowing championship. FISA has been taking care of all the rowing events since 1967. Normally fewer than fifty nations take part in the World Junior Championship with close to 600 juniors competing against each other. FISA is also responsible for bringing uniformity with the rules and regulations of the game. They are authorised to formulate the race lengths, boat composition, weight classes, time, and also betting during the races. Betting is so popular in this game that sometimes the rowers and coaches themselves have been reported to take bets.
However, this Championship is solely dedicated to the junior players from all over the world. It is the biggest regatta which creates an opportunity for a lot of players, who row internationally for the first time on an international stage. Another prominent feature of this event is that “one Euro per seat” is collected at each FISA World Rowing Championships which is used for various development programs for junior players across the globe.
This season, 30 countries will be battling in the championship at Czech Republic. Pakistan happens to be one of the participating countries.
In this regard, the Pakistan Rowing Federation (PSB) is very excited to be a part of this event as they suffered a ban for more than one year by the Pakistan Sports Board. The PSB declared that the National Rowing Federation (NRF) was non-functional in 2008. It was on account of the un-fair elections within the Pakistan Rowing Federation. This information was disclosed at the 70th session of the federation’s supervisory committee meeting. The year 2009 brought some changes and a revised legal status was given to the rowing federation which ultimately paved the way to the betterment of affairs within the NRF and the ban was lifted.
This year, the manager of Pakistan Rowing Federation, Arif Ikram is happy to announce a team of four young rowers which will take part in the championship. The team comprises of Sama Khawja, Zahra Currambhoy, Manal Kamran, and Hamza Hamid.
