The World’s Strangest Sports Team names
Sports teams and clubs all over the world have names that invoke feelings of pride and support among their fans. There are a few clubs though which have the strangest and funniest names imaginable. A lot of these clubs are international ones and their names
do not translate well or they are read a different way in another country but a lot of the time some very interesting names turn up in searches.
There are various reasons why a club has a certain name and different cultures and countries see fit to name their sports team. One reason is that the team can be named after the place where the club is situated. Another is the fact that the club could be
named after the founder or a famous sports star. A team can also be named after a company that sponsored it in previous years.
Sometimes the simplest reason is that a club wants to differentiate itself and will come up with the most unique or strange name that it can to set itself apart from the rest. There are benefits to having a unique name as any big company will tell you; it
is easy to remember, people talk about it a lot and it increases the value of your brand.
There are some very unique and interesting names that one comes across in the world of football. For arguably the funniest name of any club we have to travel to Peru where we find the Deportivo Wanka football club. The club is named after the Wankas people
who previously inhabited the area where the team is from. The team has developed a cult following in the UK, understandably so, and a lot of its merchandise sells very well in the country. Staying in the same general area, we find another very strange team
name. In Argentina a team by the name of Deportivo Moron can be found; so effectively players and fans of the team will be called morons.
There are numerous other strange team names such as Bolivia’s Club Destroyers and Strongest, South African team the Dangerous Darkies, the Joe Public FC from Trinidad and Tobago and Peru’s Total Clean Football Club. For pure comedy names we have to stop
and pick just four which make one wonder in a global environment as today, why clubs would choose these names.
The first up is a Norwegian professional women’s football team named f**t, or to give its full name Fotballaget f**t. The hilarity does not stop there; the club plays in a stadium called the Fartbana. For another extremely strange name we have to go to Ghana
where we find the Mysterious Dwarfs football team, which has now rebranded itself as the Ebusua Dwarfs. Why they are called Dwarfs is a mystery. Staying in Ghana, we come across the hilariously named King Faisal Babies, which is a professional football team
currently playing in the Ghanaian Premier League. The final funny name we find is the German football team called the Wormatia Worms. This team is apparently named after a city in Germany, in Rhineland called Worms.
So does having a strange name harm or benefit a sports team? Having a strange name or even a comedic one might benefit a team by making it memorable and helping it stand out in the minds of fans and even potential fans. But it could also put off fans of
the team who might find it hard to support a team called the Worms or the Babies.
At the end of the day research needs to be done to see whether a team’s name actually has any sort of bearing on its performance or not. It could turn out that it does not matter in the slightest and a team is only as good as its players, or it could be
that a team name actually harms the chances of a team being taken seriously and that can affect the players’ morale. A definite answer to this question will only be found with a study into the matter. Until then we can entertain ourselves with the funniest
names for team we can find.
