The Yankees wait for Pettitte while Cashman resigns Jeter and Mariano
It’s not surprising to see the major teams in major league baseball sign back their major players but things look particularly weird when one tends to glance at the New York Yankees. The side has been strategically restructuring their roster and with deals
coming through for many players in the league, the Yanks have been less interested in spending money on new blood. They freed themselves from Javier Vazquez, recently and that shows a lot of imminent change heading Bronx’s way.
Brian Cashman has been perpetually busy. He’s been tasked to see Cliff Lee join the Yanks and the winter meetings will make the process hard for the side and the General Manager. Cashman may be the Yankees GM, but his task is as hard as his position. He
recently brought back a pair of key players to the roster.
Mariano Rivera, 41, was signed on for 2 more years on a $30 million. Derek Jeter, on the other hand, is expected to return on a $51 million or more deal, lasting 3 years. The announcement hasn’t been made and the news isn’t official but the two will come
back to the roster, once their physical examination is cleared.
Cashman commented on the situation with, "We'll have a press conference about that. Everybody's professional. Just like (rappelling down a building), it takes a lot of work to get it right, and just like that, it takes a lot of work to get it right. And,
obviously, we'll be in a position to announce how we got it right soon."
However, one player missing from the bunch is none other than the club’s star pitcher, Andy Pettitte. The 38 year old is expected to declare his intention in the coming days and Brian is more concerned at putting the roster in order.
"We'll just keep putting our team together," Cashman said. "If Andy says he wants to be a part of it, then we'll start talking back with him just like we've done in the past."
Pettitte has been a part of the Yankees squad for a long time and many supporters would love to see the Houston native return to the Club for one more season. Brian Cashman isn’t one to deny that and he made a last comment on the situation, suggesting a
need for the ace at the club.
"Andy's got to put himself in play. He knows how we feel," is how Cashman summed it up.
