The ability to control how much alcohol is consumed?

Im looking for professional and personal experiences on how to limit the amount of alcohol that is consumed in one setting. For a couple of years now I go from a happy good feeling right into straight darkness (blackout) this usually happens on the first night of the week that we all drink (Friday). Saturday is usually ok because I dont blackout and I feel that I am in much more control, maybe because I am so tired from work on Friday?. Im looking at some options because it is ruining some of my relationships. Maybe drink, water, drink, water etc. Maybe eatin a litle somethin during drinking, I need some help and appreciate any comments.

  1. food is very important. Im a beer drinker ! Loves me some brew.  I have noticed a big difference with a red bull energy drink if i start to feel slugish. Beer is where its at  forget the hard stuff.

  2. The first step is to make sure to eat.  It will slow the absorbtion of the alcohol.

But more importantly, you need to control your intake.  Period.  Keep count of how many you're drinking, and don't order or open another drink until you assess how you're feeling.

The trouble is once you get drunk, you lose the ability to properly make that assessment.  Be very careful.

  3. I think it might be more like drink, water, WAIT, drink, water, WAIT, etc.  You seem to have no issues getting to the "feeling good" stage, you need to stop yourself from going past that.  You want personal experience?

At one time in my life I was a graduating senior in college.  It was at this point in my life that I started drinking alcohol  Shots.  Lots of shots.  JD, rot gut Tequila, as long as it fit in a shot glass, I drank it.  Talking with the drunk gang at work, my boss convinced me that this is not a cool thing.  His words of wisdom.  "The goal of drinking isn't to drink as many shots as you can before passing out.  What you want to do is hit "buzzville", and adjust your drinking as needed to stay in buzzville for as long as you can."

While I never blacked out before while doing shots, or throw up (most of the time, there was one or two times) I thought his idea might be worth it.  I have found a drinking schedule that works for me.  My drinks are spaced about, I drink according to the clock on the wall.  I drink a glass of water between drinks.  (yes, drinks, no more shots.)  Never drink on an empty stomach.  Take it easy, and drink only until you feel good.  Start drinking again as just before you start to sober up.

Edit: Forgot to mention something.  Blacking out is one sign, the inability to stop yourself from drinking more is another sign of alcoholism.  If you find you can't limit yourself to prevent blackouts, its time to seek professional help.  (doctor to rule out medical problem, AA/shrink for mental issues.)

  4. Well you need to control hw much you drink. It would help to eat before, and during. Try sipping your drink instead of chugging. To make it last longer and more time consuming. Set some limits for yourself. Like only bring enough money for 6 drinks instead of your whole paycheck. Cut yourself out after 7 drinks, or have a friend help you out. I mean it's mainly up to you to get a little control otherwise I would say you have an alcohol problem and you have no control of it at all.

  5. Having a glass of water between drinks will definitely be helpful. It also matters WHAT you drink. If drinking hard alcohol and mixed drinks does this to you, then switch to beer or wine. Seriously. If you don't like beer or wine, learn... because if you want to drink and have fun without blacking out and being a jerk, then you need a drink of moderation... and if you can't moderate yourself on your own, drinking something a little less strong will help tremendously.

Think about it; you could be feeling good after 5 rum and coke's, but that sixth one might put you over the edge. In the same time period, 5 or 6 beers will have you feeling good without getting wasted.
