It is the advertisers who pay Yahoo to show their ads on Yahoo pages. In fact, advertising is the main bread and butter of Yahoo

Advertisers typically pay what they call in advertising as CPM or cost per thousand impressions where the advertiser pays $X amount for every 1,000 pageviews. So let's say Yahoo's rate is $50 per CPM and the ad is shown 1,000,000 times then Yahoo earns

[1,000,000 / 1,000] x $50 = $50,000

imisidro is close but wrong. The advertisers pay yahoo on a per click basis, no base on impressions as most other CPM models work.
