I need your help.

For my homework i have been asked about what the consequences are if there are different temperatures on farming. What will happen when it is low? when it is high? and why

  1. SUMMARY

    Temperature affects most processes in plants in different ways, some very subtle. We distinguish between day temperature, night temperature, 24-hour, and short-term temperature effects such as pre-night temperature drop.

    High 24-hour temperature generally stimulates the rate of development, speeds up fruit ripening, stimulates earliness of production, and seems to favour distribution of sugars to the fruit. However, high 24-hour temperature also increases the respiration (burning of assimilates) and decreases the fruit size and may reduce fruit production.

    High day-time temperature very strongly stimulates stretching: it stimulates cell expansion and this causes length growth of the stem and increase of leaf area. Night temperature does not stimulate stretching, but is just a part of the 24-hour temperature, and contributes to the 24-hour effects mentioned above.

    Temperature (and all other factors too!) strongly influence the internal plant balance: whether plants are too generative or too vegetative. Following articles will look further into all this.

  2. Um.. as for the high temperatures, transpiration (water evaporating from leaves) will occur at a faster rate and there will also be very little moisture in the air. Therefore there will be a very high risk of getting fires.  And during droughts caused by extremely high temperatures and rapid evaporation there will not be enough water for most plants to survive on.

    In freezing temperatures, water will become ice and there will not be enough warm water for plants. That's all I know. Sorry.

    Same as if the temperature is too low -- if it get too cold, it cause a frost, therefore killing the crops.

  7. Look at the citrus industry in the USA, a place where citrus is a crop on the extreme edge. There are a lot of problems with spring damage to crops, as well as cold damage. That is a crop that would benefit from a little added greenhouse effect heat wise (they won't be crying over it) but that also causes storm issues especially during blossom set in spring.

    Look at how the long winter years effect the timing of items like the early spring crops. Too cold and they are in late, and that effects the cost everywhere while we wait for local items, and the added cost of fuel in shipping, and the problems with crops that get ruined from being out too early (crop insurance and premiums go up, and can change, are they affected by the national long term weather outlook?)

    Too hot? Those same cool weather crops like lettuce have to come out smaller or they risk them bolting (going to seed). Too hot means the possibility of increased water needs, crop timing is tricky. Greenhouse products are not exempt from hot or cold. It means more energy used to control the effect which is amplified in an enclosure both ways.

    Our environment warming means more than just hot, it means storms and the damage, it means more high winds or lack of them, it means more rain and less sun here and less rain and more irrigation there where there was no issue before.

    The big deal may be in the crop insurance industry. No one in their right mind will raise a crop with out insurance, be it sea farmers (of which I am one) or land farmers. Especially with weird weather caused from increases in temperature.

    Bottom line, it costs more, it changes what you can grow, and throws a whole lot of curve balls and bunts when all you really need is a nice easy game on a nice day.

    I'm sure I missed something and someone else in this answer block will field it.
