ive had my betta for almost 2 weeks now, and he seems to be fine, but all of a sudden my ammonia levels have gone up to .2 or .3. i have a filter so it should be cleaning the water right? i even changed about 20 percent of the water but it did nothing. do i need to drain all of the water and put new water in or is it ok to leave it like that (the betta is acting normal like the ammonia doesnt bother him, but im not sure)

  1. You need to cycle an aquarium before you add your expspensive or valuable fish (which in this case is the betta).  I would just do it over again and do it the right way .

  2. Try adding some live bacteria to eat the amonia and speed up the cycling process. You can find it at a fish store.

  3. You should do 50 percent water change use the gravel cleaner.

  4. Keep on doing partial water changes daily until the ammonia levels go down.

If the tank was cycled, then the filter would have bacteria that "eats" the ammonia and nitrite. Read about cycling here: http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php
