  2. The amount of air inhaled or exhaled with each breath under resting conditions is called the "tidal volume" and is about 500 ml.  The amount that can be forcefully inhaled after a normal inhalation is called the "inspiratory reserve volume and is about 3100 ml.  So the total amount you can inhale when you try is 3600 ml.  The amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal tidal volume of exhalation is called "expiratory reserve volume" which is about 1200 ml.  So the amount that can totally be exhaled is about 1700 ml.  What's left in the lunges is called "residual volume" and it's about 1200 ml.  All together the total lung capacity is 6000 ml
