Great Britain’s skipper has played down the effect of him and his fellow Welshman not singing the National anthem, claiming that their efforts on the pitch mattered more.
As one of the all time greats of English football, it was no surprise that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985 was made the captain when the Football Association decided to form a combined team for the home nations.
Although gathering trophies after trophies during his time at Old Trafford, the winger failed to make a mark on the International stage as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wales-c3041 never made it to any major competition during his time.
So when the chance came to play in the Olympics, Giggs was the first one to say yes and has since take on more responsibility than any other player.
However, the games have not been without controversy, as in the opening fixture, the 38-year-old and his fellow countryman refused to sing ‘God save the queen’ and instead stood tight lipped while the rest of the team continued praising her majesty.
The act has garnered a lot unwanted media attention and some members of the public have also called for an apology. But Giggs, being the senior statesman he is, reiterated that the whole incident is being overhyped and that nothing really mattered except the proceedings in the actual match.
"It's a personal thing. The British anthem is the same for a Welshman, Scotsman or an Englishman. It's difficult but it's not an issue for us. It might be for other people but, once the game starts, we're all pulling in the same direction and I think that's the main thing."
He also revealed that he was excited to play the next game in Cardiff and hoped that everything would go smoothly over there.
"I hope it won't get booed and I hope the fans will get behind us as they have in our first two games. It will mean a lot to all of the Welsh lads to play in our own stadium, our own back yard so it will be a great occasion,” the attacker was quoted as saying.
After securing a win against UAE last night, Great Britain only need a draw against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Uruguay-c3035 to secure their qualification for the next round of the Olympics.
