The art of not looking stupid?

Question

ok, so as in another post i said, i want to start surfing, i havent gotten out there yet, im 17, and i just want to know tips for not looking/sounding like an idiot around the other surfers. i have this hard habbit to break where i am very shy around new people (ill admit it, mostly guys that are cute too) and when i do say something it gets all jumbled up and i sound stupid, im sure some people know what i mean, but it happens with everyone im shy around too.

so can ya help me out here?

Like I said (and so did some other folks), get some lessons first. Nobody laughs (at least not too hard) at a newbie in the water getting lessons.

When you get to the point where you are going surfing on your own, work hard at staying out of the way of more experienced surfers. If you don't get in the way, and don't act too ditzy, and are a cute girl, male surfers (of all ages) will be at least civil to you. Surfing is an ocean sport (ocean art!), but it does not inhibit the natural tendency of male surfers to be very interested in female surfers, particularly of the attractive variety. So, if you stay out of everybody's way, don't act like a helpless ditz, smile a lot, and keep your mouth shut, you will have no problem getting long. But, take my advice, get those awkward early sessions out of the way taking lessons.

I am almost 56, but mentally, I'm still about 19, and I know I'd be friendly to a young female surfer.

The real art is not caring about looking stupid.  Surfing is fun.  You gotta start somewhere.

If it is your first time surfing you are going to look like an idiot no matter what! Just try to find a place to surf w/o too many people and be sure to stay out of the way. Get out a little before sunrise to avoid crowds.

well i would deffintally take a lession think about the the guys that will be teaching you sometimes their cute and they'll be nice you wont have to do too much talking and them maybe their'll be a guy ur age in the lession too ! you could be like jezz you already got the hang of it or something lol

then after the lession you can go out and meet some real surfer boys lol

well it means you arent that good, just lay on your board where its not deep on your belly and like, surf like that, mabye a guy will help you, and surf with you holding your hand!!!
