The battery cannot be identifed. this system will be unable to charge this battery?

I bought a non dell brand version battery after my original battery died. It fits perfectly but I get the error "the battery cannot be identifed. this system will be unable to charge this battery" as soon as the computer starts. Is there anyway to get this battery to charge?
