  1. The Early Years Foundation Stage has a complete section titled 'a unique child'. All children are unique and it is important for them to recognise their individuality.

Another section is called 'positive relationships' within this section there is a page about 'respecting each other'. It states in here "if you value and respect yourself, you will do the same to others.

The personal, social and emotional development area suggests children need to have self respect, a sense of community understanding their own needs, views, cultures and beliefs that are individual to them. Allowing children to develop these skills from an early life allows them to feel they belong to a secure base.

Check out the Early Years Foundation Stage Guidance, can be downloaded for free from the DCSF (the old DFES) site.

  2. In Maslows heirarchy of needs a sense of belonging is considered important.  An awareness of your background improves your sense of belonging and inclusion.  It also improves your sense of identitiy which Erikson considered very important in the teen stage role confusion v identitiy.  Those who are secure in their identity are less likely to rebel.

A strong sense of identity is also one of the strengths which generates resilience.
