  1. All u-locks are basically the same. I'd actually avoid Kryptonite because they're the most expensive and almost double the price of their nearest competitor.

All the bells and whistles and frills of a U-lock are moot really. When a thief steals your bike that's locked with a U-lock, chances are they're using an electric saw of some kind and no lock is impervious to that anyway. A bolt cutter, no matter the size, can't break any U-lock.

U-locks are the best because they're thick all-around. A lock is only as good as it's thinnest point, and that's why heavy duty chains and cables are almost a joke for what you pay; they're heavy and vulnerable, but expensive.

The only differences to look for in a U-lock are the thickness of the actual U and also their insurance amounts. Kryptonite is expensive, but the offer the largest insurance amount if your bike is stolen which is great - if the thief leaves the busted lock.

If you live somewhere relatively safe, you can just get something cheap like the Bell U-lock, that's only $12.00. If you live somewhere like a city, I'd recommend the On-Guard Pitbull which is much thicker and comes with insurance, but relatively cheap.

  2. I agree u-locks are about the best you can get without spending lots, look around though, cos i seem to recall my mate had a u-lock that came with a guarantee that if the bike was stolen while the lock was being used, they would replace the bike.kinda like insurance on a push-bike,cool. :)

  3. When I went to school, I used a simple U-lock and a cable with loops on both ends.

I would hook the U-lock around the rear wheel and main triangle, then loop the front wheel and bike rack (or what ever object) with the cable, and place both ends of the cable onto the U-lock.

The Kryptonite, NY Noose is a pretty stout fabric covered chain, but can be quite spendy.
