  1. Rembrandt is my favorite brand, Van Gogh, the opposite.

  2. Hi,

Rembrandt and Winsor & Newton are well known and easy to find.

Then we have Old Holland, Williamsburgh, Robert Doak, Michael Harding, Rublev and Vasari.

  3. A lot depends on where you live and your proximity to suppliers.  Some brands are only available in a limited number of countries. Try typing "artist's oil paints" (with the quotes) in Yahoo/google.

It sounds as though you want something thick to apply with a palette knife, in which case go to an art shop and tell them what you want.

  4. I would recommend Gamblin.  They are made by an artist and have good consistency.

  5. Ask a dozen artists and you will get a dozen different answers.  Some say that it depends on the style you do and the texture you prefer in the paint.  Some oil paints are "buttery" and some are full-body, and some are chosen for other reasons.

I am partial to Daniel Smith, which are made right here in Seattle, or Gamblin, made in Portland, OR.  An very accomplished portrait artist in our portrait group uses nothing but Gamblin, with linseed oil and no solvents what-so-ever, and she commands 5 figures for her work.

I would be inclined to stay away from brands that you find in discount stores, and you don't want student grades.  I tend to go with the best i can afford and that I can get without too much trouble when I run out!
