12 Ga. shotgun works great, but instead of 00, or #4, try some flechette rounds.  Really makes a mess of the BG.  Probably going to need professional help cleaning up.

I would recommend 3 calibers, the venerable .45 acp, the .357 magnum, or the 12 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot or #4 shot. Either of these are good for urban defense of your home from criminals who try to harm you and your loved ones.

For home protection I have a Mossberg 590 with 00 buc shot and I also have my Glock 30 45 with nite sites.I don't think a intruder will get away from my house.

A bit of advice from someone who has been involved in those type of situations. NEVER, NEVER say that you shot someone with the intention of killing them. You were in fear for your life, the person was trying to kill you, and you fired at him to stop his act of aggression. As soon as he stopped, you stopped shooting.

As for the best "self defense" firearm for the home? a short barreled 12 gauge pump shotgun.  As for what to load it with, most people recommend loading it with #7 bird shot which will stop a man at across the room distances without endangering others in another room or next door. But, sometimes the bad guy is wearing heavy clothing or is high on drugs. In that case, load the first 2 rounds up birdshot, then 2 rounds of #4 buckshot, then the last with 00 buckshot and a slug. this covers just about any situation from armed intruder to 4 legged critters.

It's not a matter of what you shoot him with.  As a small .22 caliber will kill a man.  It's a question of where you shoot him.  The thoracic triangle is what self defense teachers tell to practice aiming for.  It a triangle on the body with the points being the chin and both nipples.  Shots inside this triangle will always make people FDGB (fall down go boom).

My house gun is a Mossberg 500A Persuader loaded with LE reduced recoil Federal 00 Buckshot.

The best caliber is the best you can shoot with maby a .357 with .38 spec rounds, and for the guy saying the T-Rex. That gun would put the shooter in the ground before you actually shoot anyone!!!!That Hurts

I almost agree with Kurdis.P there 12 Gage 00 Buck but with full up magnum rounds. If you need to shoot through interior door but don't want to kill the neighbors your right there. Don't forget if you know where all your people are shooting through walls and doors works great. No need to wait until a bad guy gets to you to deal with em.

With a very large selections of firearms in my bedroom is a Winchester 1300 defender loaded with 7 rounds of the stuff.

If an intruder needs mercy he better get it from God because no one at my house will be giving any.

remember, you shoot to stop the threat.  If the attacker ends up dead, that is a side-effect.

The most effective way to shoot an intruder dead is with a hypodermic needle and some slow acting poison.

The most effective caliber for shooting an intruder to immediately incapacitate him is a 12 guage shotgun with buckshot.   It has a very high chance of killing him as a side effect, but remember, that really shouldn't be your goal.
