My personal pick would be Atlas. He is a virtual encyclopedia of boxing.

Who do you rate the best?

  1. As far as understanding what's going on in the ring, I'll have to pick Manny Stewart, with Teddy Atlas a close second.  Something I thought was very neat was the moment Ricky Hatton hit the canvas against Mayweather, Stewart called out "check left hook".  Not a term you've heard any other announcer ever mention.  It speaks to his knowledge of boxing and ability to call a fight.

  2. Its a combo.. Like how a combination punch can score High with the judges  .. Max kellerman and teddy atlas :)

  3. Best ringside commentator:  Don Dunphy, hands down.  Watch older fights on ESPN Classic to see some classic Dunphy. . . .he just had a style about him that just meant "a night of fights".

Best ring announcer: Jimmy Lennon Sr. is still the standard that all others try to emulate.  Buffer is really good, too. . . and he has set the "new style" of ring announcing.

Best up and coming ring announcers:  I love listening to Lupe Contreras with his "Quien es el MAS MACHO" (Who's the most macho?") tagline. . . .and Tom Treiber of Indiana is really, really good too.

  4. larry merchant tells it like it is....after the mayweather vs hatton fight...larry:so floyd, now will you set a date with the top welter in the division miguel cotto?floyd:listen larry im gonna retire from boxing,i will not let boxing retire me!

  5. Howard Cossel and Jim Lampley George Foreman

  6. Al Albert and Sean O'Grady of Tuesday Nights Fights on USA back in the 80s. They did not talk too much and kept it at the issue of hand.

Howard Cosell worked my nerves. I would not had him represent me in court because he went whatever way the wind blows. If one fighter was winning he would take their side but if the other came back and won he would say what a great fighter he was. He did that constantly. He would not been my lawyer because of that.

  7. Jim Fitzgerald.

  8. I think Max Kellerman is the best in the business he does his home work in all the years I watch him I only heard him say one thing I did not agree with and Lenox Lewis called him on it. Manny Stewart will tell you at the beginning of every fight that someone could get knocked down da and Teddy Atlas who I love tries hard to make us think he is more than a trainer he is very knowledgeable but spare me 5 different adjectives and 3 different analogies for every punch a fighter throws I don,t need to hear all of that maybe because I,m and ex fighter I pick up on to much and I may be a little too critical on Teddy.

  9. Michael Buffer.

  10. It's a toss up between Larry Merchant and Emmanuel Stewart, each with different reason. I like the fact the Merchant express things like it is without holding back. Stewart's knowledge and experience in the ring makes him great at being able to relate to what is going on with the fighters.

  11. when i first really got into boxing in the mid '80's the commentator's i heard the most were reg gutteridge and jim watt (former lightweight champ), so that's my answer.

  12. All time, it's either Don Dunphy or Larry Merchant.   It's like comparing Muhammad Ali to Joe Louis, they both have their good points, and they both have their critics.  I put Al Bernstein at the 3 spot.

  13. Al Bernstein. I don't really consider Atlas and Steward as commentators.

  14. Larry Merchant. Has no biased opinion
