The best defensive midfielders in the world ( Part 3)
One of the most important and crucial positions on the football pitch, is that of a defensive midfielder. The defensive midfielder is usually the most underappreciated player in the game, but he easily has the most responsibility when compared to the rest
of the squad.
While the rest of the team is trying to impress in their individual positions, the defensive midfielders are busy helping out with the defence and then simultaneously helping with the attack on the counter. The defensive midfield position is one, that has
become highly crucial for the game and any team without a decent player in that position is sure to fail.
Here is a look at some of the best defensive midfielders in the world at the moment.
Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure came into the spotlight, when he became a part of the Barcelona side that went on to win six trophies in a single domestic season, setting an all time record for the number of trophies won. The player was an integral part of the Barcelona team,
however the coming season, the player was dropped to the bench at the Camp Nou, with no real explanation for the manager deciding to do so.
As a direct result the player decided to pave a move away from the club and with Manchester City being the only team showing any real interest in the player, that is where the player ended up.
Toure has proven to be a more than worthy addition to the City side. The player has phenomenal ability to cover ground at lightening pace and along with being a holding player, he tends to think of himself as a defensive play maker. Standing at around six
feet four inches tall, Toure is a great threat in the air as well, he has managed to adopt the role of being a very defence minded play maker. Manchester City are still however hoping to get the same level of performances from the player, that he displayed
when he was at Barcelona and if they manage to do just that, then it is safe to say Manchester City might just become a real threat in the Premier League thanks to the services of Toure.
Javier Mascherano
The player who re-introduced the English league to the defensive midfield position is none other than the Argentinean holding midfielder, Javier Mascherano. Mascherano over the last couple of years proven to be the very best at what he does.
Mascherano was initially brought into the English Premier League via West Ham, where he performed at his level best and helped the team survive relegation, he then paved a way to Liverpool. At Liverpool the player really started to shine, he filled in for
the missing Xabi Alonso and was often found to be the player who was running the show at Anfield.
Mascherano can make more than just a decent tackle and almost always manages to dispossess his opponent, by either legal or illegal means. He also has the ability to send a killer through ball, or occasionally take a pop at goal which would result in a goal.
However during the end of last season Mascherano seemed to become a mere shadow of his former self at the club. His performances were highly lacking and he seemed to not be in the game mentally, he eventually ended up getting a move to Barcelona, where he
is yet to prove his worth, however the Barcelona management is well aware of what the player is capable off and are willing off and are offering him the time that he requires to get back to his best form. If Mascherano manages to do just that, then him along
with his Argentinean international team mate Lionel Messi, would go on to cause havoc in Europe.
