  1. ubuntu has greater support community

  2. The first thing to realize is that the similarities between the various Linux distributions [distros] are much more significant than their differences.  Different distros come with different default setups and applications -- for example, some may use KDE as the desktop GUI environment, while others use Gnome or Xfce.

Particularly if you are just starting out, it's useful to have a look at what kind of help is available.  Have a look at the online forums and other documentation.  If you have a friend that uses and is happy with a particular distro, that would be a reason to go with the same one.

Having said that, I would suggest one of the Ubuntu distributions.  Ubuntu itself comes with Gnome, Kubuntu comes with KDE, and Xubuntu with Xfce (particularly good for older or slower hardware).  My reasons:

    1.  They are all Debian based, so software installation and updating is pretty painless.

    2.  They have active communities; it's easy to get help.

    3.  I've used them myself since they started, and they've done  a good job on things like security updates.

    4.  They have installation systems that are pretty straightforward.
