  1. Oak is a good choice.  It is relatively hard, reasonably priced and is pretty forgiving of the "memory marks" left by young children.  We have cherry, which I thought would be hard enough, but it is soft enough to have a few pen impressions from someone writing heavily on paper.  Stay away from pine, it is too soft.  Mahogany is not only too expensive for a kid-oriented kitchen table, but does not stand up to the kind of abuse a "life-central" table gets.

  2. Alderwood or Oak

  3. hard maple would be a good choice...very durable and not too expensive...

  4. First off consider how young your kids are, are they over 16 or under six?

The reason I ask is that I now have grandchildren and kids will be kids, given that what you want to consider first and foremost is their safety, the table should be round with beveled edges ( two year olds love to run into table edges more than once) with table leafs if company comes. barring that try oblong, as for the best kid-resistant wood I would suggest a good cherry or oak they both have tight grains and  are easily refinished once your youngsters are over the age of 16. hope this was helpful.
