Electronic Arts explain the reasons for releasing Euro 2012 as an expansion instead of a separate title, like they used to be in the past.
EA Sports is the studio that has gifted the world with what is easily the best football simulation title in history. Soon may gasp at such a bold claim, though anyone who has played the latest iteration in the series, FIFA 12, will find it difficult to disagree.
True, the game may not be perfect, yet it seems that with each new instalment in the series the FIFA games are moving forward.
There has been one criticism of EA over the past couple of years and that has been the fact that they launch a new title every time there is an international tournament taking place. Each Euro Championship and World Cup had its own full priced game, when
it could just as easily have been released as an expansion or a DLC.
The issue was that the games were too similar to warrant a separate purchase and many gamers often felt cheated at the lack of depth and minimal improvements in the game.
This time around, EA seem to have seen the sense in releasing Euro 2012 as a downloadable expansion pack to FIFA 12.
Steve Frost, who is EA’s communication manager, explained the motives behind the change of strategy. He said, “We (EA) felt this was the best way to extent that experience and deliver fresh new content to our fans.”
No arguments there Mr. Frost. He continued, “We expect that some fans who may not have FIFA 12 will want to play Euro 2012 and therefore purchase both.”
One could jump up and shout out against the ‘evil corporations’ yet EA seem determined to take away the remaining Pro Evolution Soccer fans for their own and the move benefits existing FIFA 12 users as well.
He continued, “But the bigger opportunity for us is to offer our loyal and passionate FIFA fans new content.”
In the end, it seems a good move for both the studio and the existing FIFA 12 fan base as well so all we can say is well done EA.
