I used lemmon oil and fine steel wool to remove the scratches from a coffee table. It only made it worst.

  1. I think steel wool is too harsh.  I would try a very fine sandpaper, like "emory paper".  And I don't know about lemon oil, but there are "scratch removers" at the hardware store made just for this purpose.

  2. If they are very fine, alcohol on a cotton ball should do the trick.  You could also try the Magic Eraser.  If these things don't work for you, get a stain pen.  You can find marker like pens that actually hold little amounts of stain.  Get the one to match your table, and just trace over the scratches.  You can find these at Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc. in the paint\stain aisle.

  3. I use steel wool to remove scratches all the time.  Once the scratch is out, then I have to restore the original sheen level.  Depending upon what it is (gloss, semi-gloss, satin, flat...) I have several rubbing compounds and abrasive pads that I might use.  Try the auto department and look for polishing compounds, rubbing compounds, or Abralon pads (1000, 2000, 4000 grit).

"Lemon oil" is simply a light-weight mineral oil (with added fragrance and color) and is serving as a lubricant.

You might have to rub the whole table top to get a uniform sheen.

  4. try a mixture of cigarette ash and olive oil
