Hi, I am planning to spend 10 days in Ireland, 5 days in Dublin and 5 days in another city.

Which of the cities listed above is easier to get to? Any suggestions on how to travel (4 adults and two kids aged 7)?

What would you recommend?

Thanx a lot

  1. it is easy to travel to all of those cities through the rail network/bus routes. the rail network would be most comfortable as the trains are very comfortable. if you go onto www.irishrail.ie it will give you a list of routes and prices

  2. Travelling by bus/coach is the cheapest option but you could take the train as well but it is very expensive.

  3. Any of those three cities you can reach on the train from Heuston Station, Dublin.

Unless there's something you specifically want to do in Dublin, I'd advise cutting back on your time there and spending a couple of days someplace else.

The cities in Ireland are a bit pale compared to most other European cities, the best bits of Ireland are the rural areas, and places along the western seaboard are pretty spectacular.

  4. Well if your not going to hire a car god help ye.The government run rail and bus services(iarnroid eireann and bus eireann)are costly and unreliable and outside dublin transport services are diabolical with alot of areas having no public transport services...just to warn you.On the other hand welcome i hope you enjoy your stay!

  5. Take the bus into Dublin city centre. At present the bus is the only option to get to the city centre, besides taxis, until metro north is up and running.

Then go to Dublin's Heuston station which will connect you to the rest of the country. There are intercity services to galway cork and limerick from Dublin. However if you are going to limerick then not all services go direct to limerick from Dublin. You may have to change at limerick junction and then get a train into limerick. Saying that some services are direct. Nearly all services to Galway and Cork are direct. The trains are very modern and comfortable and while im sure there are bus services to the 3 cities, the train is a better option.

I would reccomend to spend the second half of your holiday in either cork or galway because limerick doesnt have a great reputation with regards to crime and it isn't as friendly as cork or galway. Galway is a great social city. Eyre square in the city centre is a nice spot. Also cork is nice and interesting, and generally has friendly locals. In Cork the top activity for kids in my opinion would be fota wildlife park. Fota can be accessed using the cork suburban rail line. So when you arrive in cork kent station you can connect to fota from there.  Hope this helped, enjoy your stay.

  6. You can go to Heuston train station and they do trains to all the cities you've listed. Id say Cork and Galway would be best out of the 3 you mentioned...

    Try this

    www.irishrail.ie

    Good luck! xx

  7. You could take the Bus to Galway, CityLink(It's a bus company) does runs there every hour, just when your arrive go outside follow the road to the parking lot and you'll see signs for buses(It's behind the carparks) and watch out for the Galway one.

    Buses run from 6.15am to 9.15pm .

  8. Hire a car and go to Galway first, then Limerick and finally Cork.  Once you get on to the M50 off Dublin Air port take the turn for the N4- thats the Galway roads, its straight all the way, should take about 3 hours.

Limerick is south of Galway, then Cork is south of Limerick.  Cork is magnificent, I'm going there myself in a few weeks.  Its lovely.

  9. Citylink is the best.. its only a couple of €'s more expensive but gets you there in half the time, roughly 3 hours to galway (Bus eireann can be 6-7 with stopovers!).  The Train Iarnrod Eireann is very expensive and takes about 2hrs 30 mins.  I would say go to Galway, Salthill is nice for kids, there is a fun fair there at the moment. And lots of nice scenery and tours around.  Cork is nice but alot bigger and like Dublin. Galway is very relaxed.

    Enjoy your holiday :)

  10. take the train from dublin

  11. galway would be the handiest and nicest city to visit.. u can get the train from dublin city which brings you right into the heart of galway city..

kilkenny and waterford could be another option.. bus from dublin to waterford are run by a company called jj kavanagh and  only take about 2 and a half hours. kilkenny is about half way from dublin to waterford well worth a couple of days visit! lots to see and do in both waterford and kilkenny.

dont bother with limerick - very rough city and cork as a city is not great, but has fantastic rural villages and towns which you would need a car to explore.

    look up www.discoverireland.ie

    enjoy!

  12. http://www.buseireann.ie/ Check this out.

  13. Buses or trains are the only alternatives. There is a good train service from Dublin to Cork, it's comfortable and takes less than 3 hours.
