The bets are on for the Las Vegas stop: 2011 AMA Supercross
The last stop of the Monster Energy American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Supercross, an International Motorcyclist Federation (FIM) Championship, will be going down at the Sam Boyd Stadium, in Las Vegas. For the first time ever, the contest is on the
menu of the sports book at the Wynn Las Vegas.
A super luxury resort and casino, Wynn allows the fans of numerous sports to place bets on their favourite teams or players and win big money. The most popular sports that attract the attention of the bettors include basketball, ice hockey and derby. While
the fans of these sports are already busy placing bets on the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) play-off games scheduled for Saturday, as well as the Kentucky Derby, it is the first time that the fans of Supercross, have
been given a chance to bet on their favourite riders.
In what might be considered as an experiment, the odds-maker at Wynn, Johnny Avello, has set odds on the top eight Supercross athletes along with the field. The betting window was opened on Wednesday evening.
Avello had assessed the riders’ performance this season, before setting the odds. This included the number of races that the riders had won, their average finishes and other factors. The odds may change, if one of the riders suffered an injury during the
practice session.
At the moment, according to the sports book at Wynn, the odds of winning for the leader in the AMA Supercross standings, Monster Energy Kawanasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, are set at 7/5. He is the favourite to win the race considering the sort of form that he
has depicted throughout the season. He has walked away with a win in six of the 16 races and is well poised to win the series, needing as much as a fifth place finish, in the last race only.
San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart, has his winning odds set at 9/5. He has bagged five victories in the season so far and is evidently the rider that Villopoto will be looking out for in the final. However, Stewart has also found himself becoming a victim
to crashes that have cost him the top slot on numerous occasions. Plagued by the crashes in majority of the races, Stewart is currently sitting in fourth place in the season standings. However, that is definitely not an indication of the rider’s form, as he
is also considered among the favourite to make it big in the upcoming battle at Las Vegas.
Avello has placed the odds of winning for Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey and TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed at 4/1 and 5/1, respectively. Trey Canard is also present on the books, though he has been forced out of the title race due to a broken femur.
Other than the top eight riders in the current season, the odds of winning for the rest of the field have been set to 30/1.
Betting is taking place for the last race only and not the result of the overall championship. In case someone places his bet on Chad Reed and he wins the race in Las Vegas, but loses the championship to Villopoto, the bettor will still walk away a winner.
Talking about the introduction of the action sports in the sports book at the Wynn Las Vegas for the first time ever, Avello said, “If this works out, maybe we'll book the whole season next year.”
This weekend, a lot of sport fans will be going home with full pockets, while others will be cursing their favourite teams. Make sure that you think twice before placing your bet on your team. As far as the Supercross is concerned, bettors surely will be
placing their bets on hot favourite, Stewart.
