Children who mock their parents will have their eyes plucked out by ravens and eaten by eagles.

The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. -- Proverbs 30:17

  1. Exactly....you are reading it in defense instead of opening your mind to see the true meaning.............

  2. It's a metaphor

  3. Context is everything...

Proverbs 30:17 is not a "stand alone" verse.  (It was written LONG after Moses received from God the Ten Commandments.)

The Fifth Commandment:  "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee." [Exodus 20:12   KJV]

If someone disrespects his/her own parents, that person probably doesn't have much regard for God or other people. [edit]  Blind to right and wrong = SOCIOPATH (which we see a great deal of today) [end edit]

    ______________

"This verse describes a sobering end for those who fail to keep the fifth commandment. What a gruesome end for those guilty of this! In this figure of speech, an outward manifestation (a mocking eye) represents the unseen cause in the heart (scorn, disrespect). Over the short term, the inner cause produces stress-filled family disturbances. Over the long term, though, it produces even more distressing and serious consequences—even death."

[edit]  Before Jesus walked among us, before God sent Him and before He shed His blood and died for us, God's wrath for disobedience was often very severe.  But God made a way for us to come directly to Him so that if we do fall we are able to repent and ask forgiveness.  If we are in Christ, we also now have Christ as our Intercessor at the Throne of God.  For now...   God has not changed but He has held back His full wrath in this time of mercy since so that all might have the opportunity to accept Christ and be forgiven.  When Christ returns as the Lion of Judah, many will experience the same type of wrath God displayed with the children of Israel.  [end edit]

  4. Proverbs 26:9

Like a thornbush in a drunkard's hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.

    Proverbs 15:14

The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.

  5. This is a good reason why you should burn your bible.

  6. Look around us, is there any children mocked the parents?

Did they keep they eye? If yes, than what stated there is not truth.

    What the next proverbs?

  7. Although I know that the atheist on here will mock when I say this, there are parts of the bible which are literal and others which are not. God gives us discernment when we follow Him and put our trust in Him.

These words would actually have made more sense to the people living in the days when they were written.

Much of the bible likens one thing to another in words that the people listening would have understood. These particular words are saying that if we mock and disobey our parents we will suffer for it. The choice of words used here, to explain that suffering, sound strange to those of us living now but it would have been well understood at the time.

You only need to look around at the disobedience of today's youth, the anger and hostility that they have to authority and then look at what is happening in their lives. There is no joy or happiness. Possessions are not satisfying them. Many sleep rough, take drugs, harm other people in the most horrendous ways and, in some cases, harm themselves to the point of destruction.

If these people had taken parental advice and accepted authority from teachers, pastors, and others who have more life experience, they would not be as they are now.

We can blame unemployment and recession as much as we like and, yes, these play a part, but lack of discipline and mature help in the home (or the refusal to accept either of these when offered) is the biggest cause of all this.

Many parents today are being mocked, insulted, ignored, disobeyed and the penalty of this is that the younger generation are - metaphorically - having their eyes plucked out and eaten!

  8. It would be nice if you quote Proverbs 30:17 NIV correctly:

17 "The eye that mocks a father,

that scorns obedience to a mother,

will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley,

will be eaten by the vultures.

This is a simple cause and effect. "The eye mocks and scorns" will be "pecked out and eaten".

  9. Does God train the raven himself, or is that part of a priest's job description?

  10. I think an Eagle eating your eye would be pretty cool. Imagine a bald eagle all 3-D and super huge and awesome looking (almost like a transformer, but an eagle and not a robot or a car) and it has a huge American flag behind the Bald Eagle and, in its mouth, it has your gouged out eye. I might run as president with that image.

  11. Well I certainly hope all true Christians will immediately follow this God given instruction with their own children, just as they follow all of the other instructions given in the Bible in order to be holy and good.

  12. Ironically, most Christians will actually rationalize away those kinds of statements by saying things like "they were appropriate to the time" etc. Where in the Bible does God say you can do away with the barbarism he recommends, once civilization becomes more advanced? Choosing to follow only portions of the Bible in a way proves you don't really know what you believe.

  13. Oww.

Though, considering my mom, that might be a better alternative.

  14. I laughed when I read L T's answer. Do I need to say more?

  15. it is  just a warning  that if you despise your parents  you will become  blind  to  the world.

  16. Nothing like good old-fashioned Bible-based family values!

    .

  17. If you don't have respect for your parents

Then having your eyes plucked out should

be the least of your worries.

If you don't receive Jesus in your heart and

apologize to your parents you will not see

the Kingdom Of God and you will be lost

    Forever.

    One thing is guarenteed

You will know what I say is the truth

    That day will surely come

when you stand before Almighty God

Face to Face,Just you and God

  18. I cannot help but think what made the writers think this punishment up.

  19. Have a little faith. With that comes understanding of that scripture.

  20. hahahahaha

  21. "Have a little faith. With that comes understanding of that scripture."

Yeah having faith will get you to understand that  another raven will administer an anaesthetic and the eyes will grow back..

  22. You also forgot:

    Death for cursing parents:

All who curse their father or mother must be put to death.  They are guilty of a capital offense.  (Leviticus 20:9 NLT)

If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness.  (Proverbs 20:20 NAB)

    Death for striking parents:

Whoever strikes his father or mother shall be put to death.  (Exodus 21:15 NAB)

But remember, God loves you :).

  23. It's metaphorical, the ravens and young eagles are to be likened to those who lie, cheat and steal (amongst other vices) from their parents that are vulnerable.

    Peace

  24. Straw-man argument. Where is "children" mentioned in this verse? You mislead people with your ignorance! Clearly this is referring to adults, even young adults not children. How do I know? Well, who has greater knowledge in committing evil toward their parents, adults or children? "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3) Become like children? Children are the most loyal compared to adults.

If you had a son or daughter, all grown up, and despised you so much and mocked you would you take it? This is not an order by God as stated in Proverbs 30:17. But, a figure of speech that they deserve. If you don't like metaphors or figure of speeches the bible is filled with it. Read the book of Revelation and try to make it literal like you are here.

If you take anything off the bible please don't harass it, because the bible is spiritual it has divinity and God is mentioned in it.

  25. Be nice if the usual bible apologists were to tell us the meaning then. But I suppose that would be casting pearls before swine!!

    Metaphor for what?
