The biggest disappointment at South African Women’s Open was……?
This year’s South African Women’s Open was exciting for many reasons. It was also disappointing for many fans who were expecting a very different leaderboard.
What exactly is the biggest disappointment at South African Women’s Open? Every group of fans and experts will give you a different answer. The reason is very simple - everyone wanted a result that would place their favourite player on the top or, in case
of experts, validate their predictions.
Let us start with the group that has the claim for the biggest disappointment. The South Africans. The fans wanted a South African player to win the title. They were very justified in their demand as South Africa was the defending champion and the tournament
was being held in South Africa.
Right from the results of the first round, it was apparent that South African players do not stand a chance against the top notch international talent that faced them.
The winner of the first round was the German player Caroline Masson. She led the leaderboard throughout the event and was virtually unstoppable.
The second round gave a bit of hope to the South African fans who were heartened by the fact that Ashleigh Simon tied for the first position. Simon became the centre of South African hopes as the player who will win the trophy for the home team.
Another disappointment was the performance of the top players during the first and the second rounds.  Usually, star player sets the tone of the tournament by occupying the top positions of the event. This sets the pecking order that remains constant throughout
the event.
South African Women’s Open saw many stars in the lower half of the leaderboard. Their performance was a major disappointment for many fans, who were looking out for stars like Lee-Anne Pace and Stefania Croce.
Experts also saw their predictions and analysis go haywire. The players who were expected to perform well did not, while the lesser known players really shined throughout the event. Many amateurs played great and posted good results on the scorecard.
Young players were absolutely great in their performances at the South African Women’s Open. The winner of the tournament, Caroline Masson, is an upcoming star who won the first pro title of her career.
Similarly, the South African player Ashleigh Simon is also a young player who turned professional in 2007.
Selborne Park Golf Club is another big disappointment for everyone. Players, fans and experts all found the course very unpredictable. This added to the woes of the fans and experts who were already struggling with the dismal performance of the players.
The golf course is already well known for its rough greens. Many of the foreign players were not familiar with the course and discovered how hard it could get during the practice rounds. This proved to be the greatest disappointment for players who were
so excited about the tournament.
In the end, however, the event went very well. The players played great golf and fans had a great time cheering their favourite players. Experts also enjoyed making and altering their predictions and analysis after every round.
South African Women’s Open is one for the records. Now the focus has shifted to the Evian Masters. This is another tournament where players, fans and experts will have a great time.
