The biggest moves of the summer – Eduardo Da Silva
We saw some dramatic and spectacular transfers take place this transfer window. Some of the best players in the world changed teams and made their way across continents.
Here is a look at some more of the big transfers that took place this summer...
Eduardo Da Silva
Eduardo Da Silva started his playing carrier with Dinamo Zagreb in 1999. However it wasn’t until 2001 when the player made his move to the first team. He was then loaned out to second division teams in Croatia so that he could harness his career further.
Silva made his return in the 2003/2004 season with Dinamo. He immediately made his name in the first team thanks to some fantastic performances. Silva was also highly successful with the team as he won the Prva HNL for two seasons running from 2005-2007, the Croatian Cup in 2004 and 2007 and the Croatian Super Cup in 2003 and 2006.
His rise as a super star was quickly noted by Europe’s finest teams. However, in the summer of 2007, it was Arsenal who finally agreed to ink a deal with Dinamo Zagreb to get their hands on him Silva.
Eduardo earned the much dreaded number nine jersey at Arsenal. But contrary to popular belief, he seemed like the first true number nine for the club. He was quite simply superb in what he did. Silva was scoring goal after goal along with setting up goals and helping the team progress in the English Premier League.
However, tragedy struck in February 2008 when Eduardo suffered a broken leg in a match against Birmingham City courtesy of Martin Taylor. The player had a broken left fibula and an open dislocation on his left ankle.
It wasn’t until a year late in 2009 when Eduardo managed to make his return to Arsenal. However this time around, Eduardo didn’t look like the player he was before. There was a sense of hesitation in everything he did. It also looked like he was afraid of playing as it is. Whatever it was that the player was thinking about seemed to cause some sort of a down fall in his playing ability. He was sloppy, not as quick and lost all creativity.
It was his creativity and ability to risk it all to win the game for his team that saw him rise to fame, but with that gone, fans began to wonder as to what Silva had to offer the team.
It wasn’t long before the same thoughts took over the mind of the Arsenal manager who began to ponder about the player’s future at the club. Arsene Wenger gave the forward numerous occasions to help prove the critics wrong and to earn a spot back in the team, but the leg injury that he suffered managed to get the better of him as he failed to rise to the occasion for a change.
With players like Marouane Chamakh coming into the side, there appeared to be no place left in the squad for Eduardo. Consequently in July this year, he was sold to the Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk. This move could prove to be the best possible decision for the player and for both the clubs. Eduardo will be allowed to get enough time to recover mentally and hence it would only benefit him on the club and international level. Shakhtar on the other hand would get a player who can produce moments of brilliance out of nothing.
However it won’t be long till Eduardo makes his return to the Emirates since both Shakhtar and Arsenal are in the same groups for the UEFA Champions League.
