These two black birds (not sure what kind) are in a tree in my yard. The last couple weeks they've been screaming at us a lot and hopping around on the branches all irriated like.

Now they've started to attack us when we go outside. We don't even go near the tree.

How can I stop this? My boyfriend is threatening to kill them and so far I've convienced him to allow me to find a different solution. Please help!

  1. They likely have young they're trying to protect.

    Find and move their nest.

  2. its their self defense ........ they might be afraid of u

  3. Yes, obvioulsy they have a nest and are just trying to protect it against predators...you, your boyfriend and your cat.  Harming, harassing or killing these birds in any way is against the law..they are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.  This is not a permanent thing..once the babies leave the nest the whole group will move on..just have some patience.  I suggest when you go outside carry an umbrella with you and when they swoop...open up the umbrella.  This will scare them and will protect you if they are actually making contact.  Fake owls do not always work...once the birds realize they are unmoving they are not scared of them anymore.  Birds do not like motion..so anything that moves, sways in the wind, etc.  will keep them out of an area.

  4. they are just protecting their nest,if your bf kills them not only would he be condemning as many as 4 chicks to a slow and painful death but it is illegal and they are just being good parents, they probably wont actually hit you.they do it to me all the time I just ignore them...eventually they will stop...

  5. WHY DO BIRDS ATTACK?

In the spring and summer birds establish territories, build nests and rear young. During this period, birds may engage in belligerent behavior, such as attacking creatures and humans many times larger than themselves. In this case, the birds are simply trying to protect their homes, their mates or their young.

First, try to decide what provoked the attack--

Are you close to a nest? Note the exact location of the attack or the nest, and avoid the area for the duration of the nesting season and advise children and visitors to do the same. Hatchlings are usually fledged in two to three weeks and when the young are completely on their own, the parents will stop attacking.

Is there a baby bird around? Birds have strong parental instincts and will continue to defend their young for a few days after they have left the nest. If a young bird is found hopping around the yard, it is probably still under the care and feeding of the parents and should be left alone or placed low in a bush.

This is still the nesting season.  All they are doing is protecting their nest and their young ones.  Once the baby birds are older, and the nesting season is over, the adult birds will leave you alone.  The solution is patience.

There are tips here on how to discourage birds.

  6. Try watching the Hitchcock film "The Birds" for inspiration, hahaha.

But otherwise, birds are afraid of eyes (so I have heard). If you look directly at them they won't swoop at your head. Or wear a hat with a pair of fake eyes drawn on the back.
