Question:

The blossoms on my pepper plant have fallen off?

I have planted sweet red peppers in a large pot and they seem to be growing very well. Blossoms fave sprouted and are begining to open, however, the ones that have already opened have wilted and fallen off - stem and all. Is this normal? If not, what can I do?

  1. I think that in plants like this when the flowers are pollinated (or fail to be pollinated) the blossoms die and those that were pollinated later become the peppers.

  2. It is likely that this is related to the amount of water. Too much water, too little water or irregular watering. It is easy to keep the soil too moist when plants are potted. Water only enough to keep the soil barely moist and that the bottom of the pot has adequate drainage holes. The problem also could result from low temperatures or not enough sunlight. Good luck.

  3. Peppers, like tomatoes and other sensitive vegetables, will drop their blossoms if it gets too hot.  Temperatures  85F and higher over a long time will stress the plants.  Make sure the soil is warm and moist and if you are in a heat wave, the plants have some protection during the hottest times of the year.

The plants will regrow blossoms and you will get fruit later this season.

  4. The same thing happened on my red pepper plant, too.  Just wait a few more weeks and there will be more appearing.  At least that is what happened to mine...and now they are turning into tiny little pepper buds.
