I don't know how to tell if they are disc or drum, but I was wondering about how much it would cost to get them changed.

  1. Uh, that's spelled

    brakes

and if you can't tell if they're disc or drum, are they hidden? The last bikes I remember with hidden disc brakes were the Honda VTR250 and the early PC800s.

Brakes squeak or squeal when they're dirty, but on motorcycles, you don't get the same wear indicators that some cars do. To determine their wear status you must look at the pad itself. If a scooter wore its brakes out in 1800 miles I think that would be a first.

Remember when posting a question to include DETAILS so that people can better answer you:  "The brakes on my 2003 Vespa GTV make a squealing noise when I apply them."

No one could possibly tell you how much it would cost to fix them unless they had the same scooter as you and they took it to the same dealership as you to fix it.  Pads might be around $30 and the labor at or below an hour.  Labor is billed in increments of hours (if a job takes 4 hours under perfect conditions, then you get billed for 4 hours at the shop's hourly rate. MY shop's hourly rate is $70, I have no clue what your shop's labor rate is.

  2. At 1800 miles, it's extremely unlikely they need repair, unless you drive around with them on all the time. Try a couple of hard stops from medium speed, like 45 mph. Maybe more than a couple. See if that helps. All brakes squeek at one time or another. It's not a worry.

  3. Squeaking does not mean they are worn or you need to get them changed. If they are "grinding" metal to metal then you have probs because it will destroy your drum/disc  & possibly caliper. I have an old 1979 j*p bike & the front breaks are always squealing. Its annoying. But as long as the disc or drum or break pads are not worn then it is not a prob. I would have the bike checked but after 1800 miles I would not be too worried.

  4. If there disc you will see the disc rota

there probably drum and need new shoes or just full of dust,
