My grandad passed away this week in his belongings were two whole life assurance policies dated 1958 and 1966 showing all payments had been made, how would I trace the policies and how to see if these have any monetary value, ideas please!

  1. Condolences and sympathy.

Had a blooming good look for you and couldn't trace the British Workman's Friendly Society down anywhere except in the national archives at Kew ...and all that told me was that it was no 1168 on the list of friendly societies in 1950 .... not very useful !

Obviously since 1966 they've either gone bust (possible but unlikely) or been taken over (almost certain) the trick is finding out which company they ended up as part of.

A few people you could try emailing are....

There's an Open University Team researching Friendly Societies... I bet they know all there is to know about them.. has to be worth an email...

    http://www.open.ac.uk/socialsciences/fri...

    There's also:

    The Association Of Friendly Societies

    http://www.afs.org.uk/gateway.asp

    The Association Of British Insurers

    http://www.abi.org.uk/Display/default.as...

or if you have no luck there, drop the FSA a line

    www.fsa.gov.uk

I wish you the best of luck, if you do find them I'd be intrigued to know the answer.
