that Americans can't play clay.

I'm not surprised at all.  Like Federer, they haven't been nearly as dominant this year as they were the past couple of years, and didn't even win their first title of '08 until Miami.  Plus clay is not their best surface, although they did win their very first slam  title at Roland Garros in 2003.
