It is indeed an enigma. Back at the training centre since January 18, France international, Yoann Gourcuff is a man who needs to change a lot of things in order to assure that he still has a place in the team. During the recently concluded winter transfer
window, a lot was said and written about the midfielder's future at Stade de Gerland.
After saying no to a move to La Liga side Atletico Madrid and the willingness of preisdent Jean-Michel Aulas to keep a hold of him, it remains unknown as to whether it was the player who wanted to leave the club or was it the club that tried to tailor a
move out of the front door of Stade de Gerland.
Even though he has opted to stay at the club, the former Bordeaux man still seems disillisioned. Sitting in the bencj for the second consecutive game in a Ligue 1 encounter against LOSC Lille at home, Gourcuff was not even called upon to play any part in
such a big game.
This is indeed a huge blow as Remi Garde chose to call on the services of Gueida Fofana as Les Gones pushed for a goal that was not to be found. It appears that Garde still does not trust the former AC Milan man.
However, with a Europa League game against Tottenham Hotspur coming up, it would be interesting to see what happens to the number eight of the club.
One thing is for certain. Garde is under no pressure to use the player.
"Yes, Gourcuff is a concern. He is a player who came to us to be a part of the team, he had a lot of physical problems. It is always difficult to come back and now he is having trouble finding his best form. Hopefully he will help us in this second phase
because we will need him like all others. He is an important player in our squad," said Bernard Lacombe.
Overtaken by a younger and fitter Clement Grenier, Gourcuff needs to do something if he is to avoid fading into oblivion like so many players with a promising future have.
