You aren't going to find one company that is cheapest.  The trick is finding the one that is the best fit for you.  If you choose to go to an agent, definately go to a private agent.  They can usually sell any company's insurance, so they can actually find the best deals.

I there were an answer to your question, one company in southern California that was cheapest for everyone, it soon would be the only company in existence.  You're asking the wrong question, what you want to know is "What is the best company for me in my circumstance?"  What's best for me might to the highest priced for you, it depends on too many factors.

So how to find out?  Find a local agent that is independent.  You don't want one that only works for one "big box" company, but an independent.  Give him your needs, and all your information, then let him search his data base of companies to find the best one for you.  The side benefit is you have someone local to talk to if you need to, and not a web page or 800 number only.
