The cheapest flights/ route from Australia to the USA?

I live in Melbourne, Australia and i'm going to North Carolina, USA in August for College. I'm trying to save money so that I can possibly get home for Christmas, so I was wondering if anyone knows the absolute cheapest way there - regardless of the amount of stops. I feel like Travel Agencies are ripping me off. Help?

think about how much you are willing to pay, go to priceline.com and at the bottom of the screen there's something called "name your own price" I haven't used it yet, but, you put how much you are willing to pay (up to 40% off the current rate).

do not use priceline they have horrible customer service just google them and you can read the complaints yourself.  My cousin went to school in Australia and she and her mom used this website to book their flights redhotescapes.com go to vacation packages u.s. and put your flight in do a round trip and put dates to go home in /december and try booking one way to compare the prices they always paid around 1800-2000 and that was only to Seattle so I am sure it will be more for you. plus x-mas time will always be more.  Not sure what the travel agents are saying but at least you have something to compare it with.  good luck mate

Not sure bout flight routes but have you tried STA travel online? They have the best deals always.

as an Aussie living in the US i make regular trips back home to Cairns...

i have flown with them all...QANTAS, JAL and Continental, but of them all I would recommend Air New Zealand by far!!!

their service is always great, and the prices are the cheapest...be sure that you check out the Air New Zealand website for the cheapest fairs and book directly through them.  its also easier to change your flight if you want to...

book a flight from Melbourne to San Fransisco or LA (SF would be my choice, much better airport, less people, friendlier staff) and then book an internal flight to where you need to get to in the US...
