1. Grumpy Mac is absolutely correct but I think he gave you way too much information. To begin with a good HT (home theater) will sound BETTER than any movie theater. It is true that some DVDs don't have the greatest sound tracks but the same would be true seeing it at a theater. If the quality is not there to begin with it won't be there at the theater and it won't be there on the DVD.

The sub-woofers used to fill up a theater with sound are a totally different creature than a home sub-woofer. So are the other speakers. However, for a moderate price you can easily better the sound in most movie theaters at home.

There are the answers to your questions if I read you right. If you are considering buying or setting up your own HT I'd STRONGLY suggest you learn something about it. But it's your money you'll be throwing away if you don't.

  2. A good subwoofer IS the secret behind good home theater.

First - look into SVS woofers or HSU Research woofers.

Second - look into a device called a "Behringer Feedback Destroyer"

Third - do some internet research on "House Curve".

Learning these will help you install and adjust your home theater system to mimic what commercial movie theaters have. It's NOT just about the equipment - but how it is positioned in the room and how it is calibrated.
