Question:

The circuit breaker for my townhouse (on the meter box) is unlocked. Is this legal?

I assume the builders put that meter box, out there. Obviously, I am worried about security...what good is my alarm system if some hood can just go trip the switch! I am wondering if there are laws against this so I can get the homeowner's association to rectify the problem. Thanks!

  1. I have never seen any breaker/meter box that was padlocked by the builders..it is your box they cant..You can however..go buy a padlock

  2. I think it is up to the owner of the townhouse to secure it.

Evidently someone was recently working in there. The lockouts that I have seen for meter boxes are merely thick gauge wire.

If it is a breaker panel I bet someone like an a/c repairman was recently working there and needed access to a means of disconnecting high voltage,or a breaker was already tripped and needed reseting.

    Still the owners responsibility though.

Contact an electrician.Might be easier than going through a manufacturer.

  3. any decent alarm system has a battery back up and a power loss alarm.  your concern is unfounded.  also many jurisdictions don't allow for the service disconnect to be locked  because of the need for emergency disconnect in case of fire.

  4. your concern is common, though it is a safety issue to be able to shut off your power quickly when there is an electrical problem, or any work being done on the house. Your better solution if you don't already have it, is a battery backup for the alarm system.. Check with your alarm company you my already be protected.

  5. The electrical box, being outside on a pole is considered a temporary installation. It should have been moved inside as the construction progressed. Yes, I would discuss this with the home owners association and the builder if possible. Otherwise it could cost you to have the box moved.

  6. Local Codes, (You don't say where you are), may well

require an exterior safety disconnect in case of fire.

Find out before you do anything.
