I took an anthropology class online and the ending class average is an F.

Average grade on the midterm-- F

Average grade on the final-- F

Average grade on the class project-- F

Average grade for participation on the discussion board-- F

The book he chose is from 1979 and most of the class, obviously, had trouble comprehending it.

He has to curve the final grades for the class, right?

  1. Not sure he can curve the final grade with that low a %. He really messed up.

  2. That seems a bit ridiculous that the ENTIRE class failed, and it also seems ridiculous that not one student could "comprehend" a text book written in 1979.  I would question how he could justify using a textbook that old, however.  BOTTOM LINE:  He does NOT have to curve the grades.  He can turn in the grades as all failures and he still gets paid.  He will likely be scrutinized for future classes, however.

  3. No teacher ever HAS to curve grades.  Some will, but some NEVER do that and actually take joy in failing students.

  4. Sounds to me like no grade or test data has been added to the website.  I wouldn't count on passing yet.

  5. He doesn't have to do anything.  If his classes always do this poorly, he most likely curves, but if your class was unusually bad, he may leave the grades the way they were.  The fact that the book was old shouldn't make a difference in a class like anthropology, where things don't change dramatically over time.  Certainly if this had be an information technology class, the fact that the book was seriously old would make a difference, but probably not here.

  6. I think so. I don't think he can allow everyone to fail.
