The compensation figures being speculated about for Barry George?

Are far less than payouts people have had recently from the press in libel cases (not mentioning any names) doesn't this strike you as a little unfair? I mean the guy has been locked up for 8 years for nothing!

  1. I do hope George is fairly compensated for his ordeal, and that some heads roll at Scotland Yard for their shambolic handling of the investigation.

As for libel payments, well, acts of libel can have consequences that are just as serious as wrongful conviction (read up on the case of Christopher Lillie and Dawn Reed if you don't believe me - one of the worst libel cases in British history) and the compensation payouts are not necessarily higher.

To those who think he was freed on a "technicality" - the original prosecution case hinged entirely on two pieces of forensic evidence that were later proved to be worthless. That's hardly a technicality.

While George is undoubtedly a s*x pest and a menace to women, it is highly implausible that such a shambling and incompetent figure could have perpetrated a clinical and efficient killing such as this, which was almost certainly the work of a professional hitman.

  2. The whole compensation system isn't fair, especially when you look at how little badly injured members of the armed forces receive sometimes. Barry George may have been an unsavoury character to say the least, but that doesn't make him a murderer, as has been proved.

  3. It's not much for 8 years, however a lawyer was saying on the BBC news this morning that he didn't lose any earnings or earning ability, so that's why it wouldn't be a massive payout.

  4. being incarcerated for 8 years at her Majesty's Pleasure, no matter any amount george is awarded It will have the 8 years bill for boarding, catering, electricity, water charges, etc etc, deducted

if he'd been filmed using the services of a ( policemans' wife, no less )

d********x, thrashed by her & her minions, while barely dressed in a uniform barking german commands...............

    If only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the injustice of libel pay outs makes me cringe.

  5. "Scientific evidence which helped convict Barry George of the murder of the BBC presenter Jill Dando six years ago has since been codified by the government's Forensic Science Service as "of no value", What I want to know is 'Why' has it taken so long for forensic scientists to dismiss the firearms residue, seems rather a long time, if he is innocent he will deserve a considerable amount considering his life has been distroyed even if he was a b@st ard,

  6. He is a real gentleman and should get tons of money.

  7. Tecnicalities in the re-trial.

    No smoke without fire

  8. As you say, it's just speculation at this stage.

Just as well we don't have hanging.

    .

  9. Don't forget he was reported for Rape and assault by different women before he was convicted for Murder.  Seems like they finally got him for something whether or not it was the right crime.

  10. Of course he should receive some sort of compensation for his wrong conviction, how to measure the compensation though.  However, I hope he does the decent thing and donate some of his compensation to groups helping ladies that have been stalked.

  11. He should of course be entitled to a fair pay out, 8 years is a long time to be incarcerated for a crime he did not commit.

  12. i guess its just speculation at the moment.

But i do agree with what you say, the two are incomparable in so many ways.

George deserves a lot more than any libel payout figure. It must be horrendous to be jailed for 8 years for a crime you didn't commit :)
