  1. It is the wail of a banshee.  They don't cry.  They have a problem that needs to be resolved, but they cannot face the problem themselves.

That Poser Babe below doesn't know what she's talking about.  Banshees of legend are different from real banshees.

  2. More likely the banshee should be thought of as the "spirit of the family", a spirit who attends to the family in a time of transition. The banshee is described as a wee woman with long white, blond or even auburn hair who appears in the vicinity of the birthplace of the soon to be deceased. When seen, she is wearing the clothes of a country woman, usually white, but sometimes grey, brown or red.

  3. a banshee's cry is supposedly so excrutiatingly high pitched that it cause you to die.

"In Irish legend, a banshee wails around a house if someone in the house is about to die. There are particular families who are believed to have Banshees attached to them, and whose cries herald the death of a member of that family. Traditionally, when a citizen of an Irish village died, a woman would sing a lament (in Irish: caoineadh, [ˈkiːnʲə] or [ˈkiːnʲuː], "caoin" meaning "to weep, to wail") at their funeral. These women singers are sometimes referred to as "keeners" and the best keeners would be in much in demand. Legend has it that, for five great Gaelic families: the O'Gradys, the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, and the Kavanaghs, the lament would be sung by a fairy woman; having foresight, she would sing the lament when a family member died, even if the person had died far away and news of their death had not yet come, so that the wailing of the banshee was the first warning the household had of the death."

  4. the wail of a banshee is supposed to mean it has a problem that it needs your help solving.  No one knows what the wail sounds like, but you will know when you hear it.  Then you have to help it, or it just keeps at you.

  5. The appearance of a banshee portends an imminent death. They are Characters in Irish(Gaelic)folklore. That anyone thinks they are real is incredible to me.There are sadly, some silly people around. That they actually pose as knowledgeable experts is funny. When they degrade obviously smarter people it's hilarious.

  6. Poser's answer is very good. I will add some to it.

The Banshee is an Irish spirit and cries (caoines) only for "true" Irish families. This is why she is attached to certain names, as Poser mentioned. The Banshee is believed to be either a fairy woman (the old version of fairies as divine beings and not the little ones with wings), the spirit of an ancestor of the family for whom she cries, or the spirit of an unbaptized child. The word Banshee, bean sidhe in Irish, means "fairy woman" (bean = woman, sidhe = of the fairy mounds).

The origin of the Banshee is unknown but is probably a combination of the keeners Poser mentioned, the Christian belief in ghosts, and the pre-Christian belief in the divine beings of the fairy mounds. Examples of this last group include the goddess Brighid (Brigit) who is credited with introducing keening to Ireland, and the fifty women of the Fairies who lament for the death of Fraech in "The Cattle Raid of Fraech".

Their are several legends attached to Banshees. One is that if you find a Banshee's comb on the ground and take it home she will soon come for it. It is dangerous to hand it to her directly so you should pass it through the window held in a pair of tongs. Another is that if you catch a Banshee and correctly answer three of her questions she will grant you three wishes. Stories like these vary according to location and period in history.

The Banshee's cry is said to be an intense wail of grief.

  7. I'm not sure about banshee's either
