Question:

The danger of Javelin?

Do you think there is a possibility of danger in Javelin? When the competitor throws the spear, the judges will run towards the spear before it hits the ground. Will there be a possibility the spear will accidentally stab and pierce through one of the judges that ran to receive it?

  1. Let them manage...

  2. It happened a few months ago.

I think it is better not to try to catch it with your lips

  3. It happens - see link below

  4. Yes, the "possibility" is there. But really, they'll only get stabbed if they're not watching the javelin...which is pretty much what they're paid to do all day.

  5. One of these days a competitor will have a fluke throw and someone will be killed. Same with the hammer.

  6. The judges normally stand behind the world record line, but it so happens it`s on the bbc now  They are standing in the firring line, rather them than me.

  7. Hi there.

Not only is there a danger, I have actually seen a judge hit by a javelin on tv and he was lucky to survive. The clip is quite well known, must be out there somewhere - the judge is quite old and is looking at a race on the track instead of at the javelin thower, end result = ouch!

    Cheers, Steve.

  8. I reckon its an accident bent to happen!

  9. definitely there is.. even i have the same doubt and fear of javelin. :)

  10. The judges all have to go on a javelin safety course, but still mistakes do happen.

  11. I saw that happen once on video footage a long time ago. The judge advanced too close and too soon when the javelin was still in the air and...Uhhh, wasn't pretty!. o.O

  12. That happened to a guy in my school. He wasn't listening to the instructions and went to collect his javelin before everybody had thrown and he got stabbed.

Scary how the olympic guys get so close and don't seem scared...

  13. It has happened more than once, I've seen footage on television.

  14. It is the same in all throwing events hammer discus not so much the shot when you think men are throwing a 7 1/4 kg hammer women 4kg you must obviously be very aware of the damage it could do especially at club events where control is sometimes less than perfect hence the cage for discu and hammer

As an official you have to be very aware of the implement. a horn is blown at all uk athletic matches before the implement is thrown. to warn the officials an athlete is going to throw,, the officials then respond by acknowledging usually by waving their hand you then watch the throw from the athletes hand until it lands We take safety very seriously if you  watched the long and triple you would see a stopper put on the track to stop the athlete jumping until eg the pit is raked
