The darn boat won't shut off! ?

Ok, we have a 1987 19' Bayliner. Evenrude 150hp engine. This weekend we put a new fuel pump on it. Once it started up, which by the way, happened beautifully and it sounded great, we couldn't shut it off. And before you ask, we actually took the key out of the ignition and the lanyard as well... still it purrs like a kitten. The only way we can shut it off is to take to hood off the engine and use the choke to kill it. Anyone have any clue as to what can be causing this? It wasn't doing this before we put the new fuel pump on.

  1. If it was working ok before the fuel pump replacement it's some thing that happened while the replacement> Check the large harness plug & all plugins as if not in all the way might cause your problem>

  2. the kill circuit is a black wire w/yellow tracer coming off the power pack (if that model has two powerpacks, both have a black/yellow wire).  When the keyswitch is in the "off" position it connects the black/yellow to ground.  The emergency lanyard has the kill wire on one post and a ground wire on the other, and closes when pulled to make the connection.

your kill wire got pulled out of a connector, or (less likely) pulled out of the powerpack, or otherwise developed an open circuit fault somewhere.  Check the connectors under the cowl for tightness.  Unplug the big red main harness plug, make sure the pins are straight, plug it back in, you'll find it no problem.

is your electric choke not working?

  3. somthing is wired wrong and keeping the fuel and spark going that or your ignition switch is stuck on.

  4. that can only happen if power is still at the coil pack only diesels run on compression petrol engine compression ratio wont generate enough heat to fire the fuel. something you moved or put back on is incorrect get out the test light or multi meter and start testing can be the only answer
