The defining moment for Inter's Rafeal Benitez
It’s a big day for Inter Milan today as they face Twente Enschede, a Dutch professional football club based in Enschede. According to many, the million dollar question now is; Does Rafael Benitez’s future rely on today’s match? Inter Milan’s club president
Massimo Moratti appeared in a press encounter on Monday stressed that Rafael Benitez’s job will not be under threat even if Inter lose to Twente in a very important game to be played on Wednesday 24, 2010. The president had full stopped the speculations on
Benitez’s career with the club and revealed that he is backing the latter.
Apparently according to Moratti, the club and the players have certainly not shown any lack of confidence in Rafael Benitez. Moratti told reporters that Inter must try to get a good result and it is rather vital that the coach and squad understand the importance
of Wednesday’s game. He added, “The match absolutely needs to be played with anger because we would not go any where.”
Media reports even speculated that the Spanish coach could be sacked just six months after joining Inter Milan if they lose to Twente Enschede. President Massimo Moratti gave a twisted and unclear view when asked for faith in Benitez.
The sixty year old Spanish football manager and former player is currently in charge of Inter Milan having replaced Jose Mourinho in June 2010. Since the very beginning Rafael’s stay with the Italian club has not been so good. Apart from the controversies,
he still has managed to enjoy a good repute in world football.
Benitez was formerly attached with Liverpool, famous English football club, and he achieved his goal when Liverpool won UEFA Champions League – the highest honor in European club football. In the following three seasons, Liverpool won the FA cup, but apart
from all this, Liverpool still could not win English Premier League as their best attempt was to finish second in 2008 – 2009 behind Manchester United.
The ex – Liverpool manager did trigger a lot of dedication, commitment and hard work. His tactics did work for him for a season or two but the overall picture for him was a rather disappointing one for the Spaniard.
Now what could be the reason of Moratti supporting Benitez for his stay with the club is yet to be discovered as the club is facing some serious problems.
The latest head-butt controversy for Samuel Eto'o in which he head-butted Chievo defender Cesar in the chest doesn't help Morrati's cause. Inter lost 2-1 to Chievo last Sunday to go down by nine points in Serie A points table.
“It could lead to a heavy ban. I hope nothing happens but it’s too early to comment on that” said Morrati.
Media is also increasing speculations over the manager’s future with the club and perhaps the only silver lining for Benitez is the support he's getting from Moratti and company. But at the same time, the result of today’s match between Inter Milan and
Twente Enschede will have a greater impact over the president’s point of view as a victory for Inter will put them through to the round of last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
There are also rumors flying around of Walter Zenga, the former goalkeeper of the Italian National side, replacing Rafael Benitez with. Walter has revealed that Inter Milan has not contacted him over the on–going issue. Zenga though, has faith in Benitez
and believes that the Spaniard is fully capable of resolving Inter’s problem. According to him, Inter was being underestimated and he insisted that Benitez and the players will surely get things back on the track.
One will have to wait and see whether Zenga's belief works for the Spaniard and tonight's encounter will surely prove out to be a defining moment in Benitez's career at Inter.
