  1. Ok, you have alot of good answers here, but one thing I didn't see mentioned is this:

Most sports are team orientated.  Martial arts is an individual sport.

Martial artist are usually very self-motivated and independant, capable of finding internal power and relying on internal strength, confidence, and ability to master their sport.

Most other athletes have a team around them that they look to for support when things are going bad.  As a martial artist, your failures fall directly and solely on your shoulders.  Therefore, it is up to you and no-one else to find the problem, fix it, and master it.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Sportsmen compete against each other for momentary glory.  Their games and careers end.

Martial artists compete against an unachievable standard of perfection.  They can do so for their entire lives.

  3. If you're talking about sport karate and martial artists, the answer is simple.  In sport karate, you have rules you have to follow when competing.  Weather it's kickboxing, point fighting, or full contact, not following the rules can cost you the fight.  They are also divided up into weight and age divisions.  Some are divided into rank levels.

Martial artists who practice for self defense have one training goal...survive the attack.  They aren't looking to win trophies or medals.  Often time a true defense against an attack is ugly, but if it gets the job done, it's a success

  4. Martial arts can be used as a sport, however it is a martial or combative art. It has a broader use other than entertainment. The name gives it away. Martial or useful for combat. It is unlikely you will see a tennis player or golfer use their tennis or golf techniques in hand to hand combat or if they tried it might be somewhat comical to watch.

People what the heck is it with all the thumbs down. Because an answer may not be as good as you think it should be why thumbs down?  If it isn't mean or derogatory and the person has a different opinion that is what makes this site work. We get a broad spectrum of answers and somewhere there in may be the truth.

  5. Mostly all sports stem from some form of combat. In this way you can say that sports are the descendants of war games/practice. Taking a look at the Olympics(the original ones) all events had a direct corresponding tactic on the battle field.

Today sports have branched out and evolved slightly but every player wants to win and this is the spirit of combat that lives on.

Martial artists are a sort of a throw back. We practice the combat arts directly and rather than specializing our bodies for one aspect in a sport, we try to train our entire body to specialize in any possible aspect of fighting. For example, a baseball player is expected to do very specific tasks based on their position, but a pitcher in the outfield and you could be asking for trouble. A martial artist can not afford to be that pitcher in the outfield so they must train in all aspects, blocking, striking, take downs, etc.

Thats just a high level. Something to think about.

  6. I play sports for fun. I do martial arts for fitness and self defence...in case of attack!

  7. Martial Artists- They study and practice the martial art to an Art Form.

It is respeted, and the history is respected, they learn humility, and respect

Sports people- They learn techniques for self preservation, and self glory.  They lack the respect for the Art, and are only seeking glory

  8. sportspeople get paid a lot more. only a few martial artists get paid a lot. generally sportspeople have more fans.

  9. martial artists study martial arts whereas sportspeople play or compete in their chosen field of sport. however as somepeople have been saying the majority of sports people get paid high amounts but some martial artists do get paid high amounts as well such as the cage fighters of the ufc.

    all the best

    namsate

  10. A sportsperson plays sport amateurly or in a professional  setting.  Professional sportspeople are usuall paid, e.g. golfers, footballers etc.

A martial artist a martial artist is simply a person who is trained in martial arts. A martial artist,  is a warrior who emphasises finesse and precision over brute strength, and relies on speed, skill and agility instead of heavy armor. Within these boundaries, martial artists in real-life history and fiction are diverse, and the martial artist class is correspondingly flexible. For example, a kung fu master, a Zen archer, and a wuxia swordsman could all be portrayed using this class. While many martial artists are famous for their unarmed combat skills, not all of them have to be so.

At the same time, not all combat-oriented characters from Asian backgrounds will be martial artists. Samurai, for instance, would be fighters, while a berserk tribesman with a machete could be a barbarian.

  11. Sportsmanship is something very beautiful. It is about competing against each other according to some rules that are fair.

On the other hand martial arts seek to compete with oneself aiming at perfection. Martial arts train the spirit, the mental discipline behind is what makes a martial artist challenge himself towards the best.
