ACP means Automatic Colt Pistol. It's a specific cartridge developed for the 1905 Colt semi-auto pistol and used in the 1911 Colt next. .45 AUTO is a short version of Automatic colt Pistol and is a less accurate designation.

Auto is short for 'automatic.'  And acp stands for Automatic-Colt-Pistol.  So when speaking of the ammunition, .45 acp or .45 Auto are one and the same.
