The start of any volleyball match takes place with a serve. But before that, the two teams need to determine who gets to serve the ball. For this purpose, a volley is made. The ball is bounced on the court by one team in such a way that it goes over to the
other side of the net. Normal play commences but the side which misses to make a hit also misses to get the first serve.
When the first serve is determined in such a way, the server must serve the ball. The server serves the ball by standing outside the court, opposite to the net. The serve is only allowed into the court once the contact with the ball is made. It is up to
the server whether to make the serve an overhand or an underhand one. While executing this action, the server must take care that the view of the opposing team is not blocked and that they can clearly see the ball.
Once the serve is made, it must go to the other side of the court and team-mates are not allowed to make contact with a served ball. Previously, if the served ball made contact with the top of the net while crossing it, it was considered an illegal serve.
However, according to the recent rule changes, the grazing of the served ball with the net as it crosses over is considered legal.
As the served ball comes to your end of the court, you are not allowed to attack it or set it. A served ball is intended to be played and passed over to the serving side. Once regular play starts, the ball can be attacked or set as seen fit by the players.
Once the ball is served, the players on each team are allowed to change their position and move anywhere on the court. If a team player has made a hit on the ball because of which the ball is headed out of bounds of their own court, then it is allowed for
a team member to move outside the court and hit the ball in order to save a point from going to the opposing side.
However, if a served ball that is coming towards your end of the court but is headed out of the defined court lines, than it would be prudent to not to make a hit on the ball as an out of bound serve would score a point for your team
