  1. Dove will sit on their eggs or babies to protect them from any animal that may be lurking around wanting to hurt them. The doves mate will bring it food so don't worry about it starving.

  2. Unless the bird is dead, I can only assume that it's nesting.

Nests are for eggs and nestlings.  If the dove is in the nest, it's incubating eggs.  Doves are devoted parents.  The eggs and nestlings are never left unattended.  Incubation is shared by both parents.

If it's a mourning dove, eggs are incubated for 14 days, and chicks remain in the nest for another 11-15 days before fledging.

  3. Are you referring to a pet dove or a wild dove? If it is a wild dove, it is likely the the parents switch and you do not notice. With doves and pigeons, the mother sits on the nest at night while the father fends for himself... during the day, the father sits on the nest and the mother stays nearby.

Don't try to throw seed to it. There are more than likely two parents around. However, if it would make you feel better, throw seed on the ground and they will eventually get to it.

If it is a pet, then obviously the eggs aren't fertilized (if just one dove is in the cage). What will eventually happen is she will crack one up for the nutrients, or after a number of time eventually abandon it.

  4. Are there eggs? Baby birds? I had a dove in our bush and she never left the nest, but one day when she did to get food squirrels attacked the eggs and ate them and the dove never came back... I do think it is ok for it to not leave the nest though....
