  1. Modern LCDs and plasma displays are both very good. Problems with both of them of a few years ago have been overcome.

Plasma generally costs a little more than LCD. Plasma is generally brighter, good for high brightness viewing areas, and has a faster response, better for fast motion. I usually recommend LCD because the performance is very good, they tend to last a little longer, are less expensive, and lighter.

Life span and susceptibility to burn-in are both about the same now.

Plasma displays were previously plagued with burn-in and short life spans. LCD was plagued with low contrast and brightness and poor viewing angles. Again, today's sets are excellent.

Check the specs, look for highest contrast ratio and brightness (these work together), highest viewing angle, highest actual display resolution, and lowest response time, then compare prices. Also examine ergonomics, layout of the remote control, inputs and outputs, and so on.

1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480i are video formats. Which is better is subjective. p stands for progressive, i stands for interlace. Progressive is generally better for fast motion content. 1080 is higher resolution than 720, so between 1080i and 720p it's a trade-off. 1080p is not and will not be used for broadcast content, it is for devices such as Blu-Ray only.

Remember these are video formats and are NOT the resolution of the display. A typical display resolution is 768 lines, the set converts the input format to fit the display. Only on very large displays is a difference in the source format normally detectable.

1080p as a supported format will come with additional cost, and explains why the 1080p LCD is close in price to the plasma.

All modern TVs support both 720p and 1080i as input formats.

  2. Go with the 1080p LCD

Plasma have a higher contrast ratio than LCD (more colors and darker blacks)

Plasma uses more electric than LCD

But the kicker is lines of resolution 1080p is the best followed by 1080i then lastly 720p.

HD is anything over the standard 480i that regular TVs have.

An LCD with 3,000:1 contrast resolution or less even w/108p is not going to compete with a plasma with only 720p.

You need a LCD with 10-15,000:1 resolution to start to compare.

Also how big is this TV?

How far away are you sitting?

    Lighting conditions?

If you want the most from you blu-ray movies or hd broadcast get the 1080p set

  3. LCD!  Plasma doesn't last as long and drains out.....my husband works at  an electronics store and we have a beautiful LCD for that reason.  They won't tell you that at the store.  Plasmas are for wealthy people who switch out their televisions continually.  Good luck.

  4. cnet.com will answer this question

  5. Honestly if you get a plasma tv and you treat it with care it will last for a long time.  Newer plasmas have a viewing span of up to 60000 hours, which is watching tv for 5 hours a day for 27 years.  A plasma tv will be a lot cheaper and as long as you don't leave a stationary image on the tv for a long time you won't have a problem with burn in. Also new plasma tv's have built in feautures to get rid of the burn in problem, for example white flashes.  Good luck with your decision.

  6. don't buy plasma, it breaks easily.  LCD is better.
