The education system?

Can I ask that some of you explain to me *some of* the faults of the education system? In impoverished urban areas? Racism and segregation in education? (I don't ask about how other children are treated by their peers)

  1. -Students in impoverished urban areas go to school with other children who are from the same background, and often the same race.  This is a form of segregation.

-They do not tend to start with the advantages some other students have, such as parents teaching them to read and write before they start school, and teaching them academic general knowledge, and do not tend to speak standard English.

-It is challenging to teach at such schools, so they often do not attract the best teachers, and sometimes schools have difficulty filling positions at all.  Because of this, some teachers may be under-qualified, and there may not be many years of experience among the teachers.

-Students may be mobile, moving from school to school, getting a disrupted education.

-The schools, parents, and students themselves may not have high expectations of academic achievement.

-Teachers tend not to share the background of the students (race, class, etc.) and may not have adequate understanding of their culture.

-The schools may not have as many extras, including field trips, art, music, instructional assistants, and so on, since they can't raise so much by fund raising, and often have to supply more of the basics such as pencils and paper that students in wealthier areas may bring themselves.

    - If the schools do not meet goals for STAR testing progress, they are penalized (teachers and administrators may be replaced if the lack of progress continues).
